Kindergarten Handbook

Welcome to the kindergarten program at James Knoll Elementary School. It is important that the school and the home have close cooperation from the very beginning of the school year. We hope you enjoy kindergarten with your child. The kindergarten year is one of the most exciting in your child's school career! Make the most of it.

Arrival & Departure Time

School begins at 8:10 a.m. and the tardy bell is at 8:15 a.m. Please be sure that your child arrives on time, but not too early. The children will go outside, but there is no supervision until 8:00 a.m. School dismisses for students at 3:05 p.m. Please wait outside the room until your child has been dismissed by the teacher. If for some reason you need to bring your child early or will be picking your child up late, please call and let us know.

Bus Information

You may call the bus garage before 7 a.m. if your child is not riding the bus that day. This is especially true if the driver adjusts his route to make a stop at your house. The city bus is available to transport your child to and from school. There is a minimal charge for this service.

Notes

If your child's schedule is to vary from the normal routine, please send a dated note. We cannot go by what the children say, as they often get confused about plans. If your child will not be attending school because of illness, appointment, or other family reasons, please call the school to inform us. Upon returning from an absence, please send a dated note to comply with school policy.

Meals at School

We encourage your child to eat breakfast with the class in the morning. If your child doesn't want to eat, but would like a milk, please send $.30 in exact change so they can purchase one. If your child packs a noon lunch and needs milk, please send $.30 in exact change.

Kindergarten Newsletter & Backpacks

Please be sure to look in your child's backpack everyday. The newsletter will come home every Thursday. ABC homework will come home on Monday and should be returned by the following Monday.  Homework bags are an optional homework that the children enjoy. They are sent home on Monday and should be returned by the following Monday. These are not for independent play and should be used as a learning tool. Be sure that all parts are in the bag when it is returned to school.

Snacks

The cookie basket will come home some time during the year. A note tells you the number of treats to bring. It doesn't have to be returned the next day. Your child may bring snacks to share when we celebrate their birthday. If your child has a summer birthday, we will celebrate it during the school year.
